Vasiliko Bridge


## Art, research, social engagement and documentation in one interwoven structure.  

Cartography is mostly regarded as an objective representation, while in fact maps are loaded with subjective views or interpretations. **Nexus** is an attempt to creatively explore a landscape and a community, it is a way to map my physical and mental journey in which I create real and imaginary trails to evoke and share a sense of place. **Nexus** has no end. 

I approach the project as a field of possibilities, a multileveled (learning) experience and an ongoing opportunity. Central to my actions is exploring the relationship between the natural and the cultural, exploring the notion of borderlines and boundaries and taking into account the concept of the open work, both as ephemeral and unfinished. I reflect on key questions such as, how much do I interfere with the natural environment and to what extent I relate myself to the place and the local community. The relationship between the unit/individual and the whole/collective also concerns me and my practice. Like a mosaic, every little piece is part of and contributes to the whole.   

The dynamicist theory, cognitive function suggests that *“the parts are able to relate or connect to any other in multiple, nonlinear ways” (Sullivan, 2005, p.121)*. Departing from the idea of the rhizome and the nexus and taking into account the digital presentation of the project, I created an interactive map documenting ideas, sensations, conversations, processes and interventions. A map is not linear and so is the development of the project. The different elements correlate one to another, they develop and spread in various directions like the stems of a rhizomatic plant.

## Interaction forms experience 

Our planet lies at a critical juncture. Our world is struggling with interconnected crises and multitudes of threats to its integrity. Central to this is understanding our interdependence. Nowadays, we are engaging simultaneously in the reappraisal of the environment. Development can only be achieved within certain environmental qualities. We have to understand complex interrelations between energy provision, material and food production, and the process of urbanisation. Both at a local and international level, it is necessary to meet our needs within a sustainable environmental framework. 

For the “Turning the Tide” project, I have chosen to work in the region of the Lelantine plain, a fertile region, named after the river Lilas, which is situated in central Evia, between Chalkida and Eretria. In 2009 and in 2020 after heavy rain in the mountains the region experienced sudan floods as the banks of the river couldn’t hold and gently stream such big amounts of water, alluvium and other materials were carried away and ended up across Evia island, hence the cost of Oropos, where I live.

My inquiry began based on the basic idea of interaction *“Because every experience is constructed by interaction…between self and its world…” (Dewey, 2005, p.256)*. I felt the urge to explore, feel and learn about this landscape, the river, generally the region and its people.My interest expanded from people’s experience of the specific incident of the flood, to how they relate themselves to the river and the Lelantine region. The relationship between people and their environment creates a way of life.

This interaction of human activity in the environment needs constant observation in order to develop a better understanding of the impact of human activity on the planet. Through my practice, I seek ways of expression and creation in a relational framework, in which human relationships shape the aspects of our lives within the eternal process of becoming. With the support and participation of my family, I embarked on a journey to develop ideas, to unfold  new relationships and to open up for further collaborations.

Nexus

In Afrati, a village located in the east side of the Lilas river, I had a spontaneous conversation with Mr H. He talked about the floods and how the river has changed in time. He also talked about water pollution and the decline of agricultural activity of the region.

> Και εδώ, στο Αφράτη πλημμύρισαν σπίτια. Αριστερά της κοίτης του ποταμού ήρθαν τα νερά, μες στα σπίτια. Πάθανε μεγάλες ζημιές. Πιο κάτω, στα Φύλλα, έπεσε η γέφυρα, έγινε ένα φράγμα και το νερό πήγε προς τα Φύλλα, καταστραφήκανε και περιουσιακά και υλικά, δηλαδή τρακτέρ και αυτοκίνητα, με αποτέλεσμα να φτάσει πιο κάτω το νερό, μεγάλος όγκος του νερού, δεν το “έπαιρνε” κάτω, το Μπούρτζι, γιατί, έπρεπε στο Μπουρτζι να φύγουν πολλά σπίτι από εκεί, να απαλλοτριωθούν. Οι ανθρώποι, να πάρουν ένα ποσό και να πει, ξέρεις κάτι, το κράτος, πάρε αυτά και φύγει, για να μην έχω καμία ευθύνη εγώ. Από εκεί και πέρα, εάν κάποιος δεν ήθελε να φύγει και πλημμύρα να γινότανε, να μην μεσολαβήσει το κράτος ότι πνίγηκε το σπίτι.

### “The river will always find its path…” 

> Δίπλα είμαστε και εμείς στο ποτάμι. Και τα βλέπαμε ότι ήταν μεγάλος όγκος του νερού και μακρά μην ξαναγίνει αυτό, αλλά θα γίνει αυτό το πράμα… Απο’κει και πέρα αν έρθει πάλι ένα τέτοιο ποτάμι, το πρόβλημα, εδώ μπορεί να είναι λίγο λημμένο, δεν ξέρουμε, αλλά κάτω θα υπάρχει μεγάλο πρόβλημα. Δεν θα βγαίνει το νερό στη θάλασσα. Το ποτάμι το έχουν κάνει όπως είναι αυτό το μπουκάλι. Είναι παχύ πάνω και στενεύει κάτω. Που έπρεπε να ήταν το αντίθετο. Ακριβώς. Όσο πάει προς τη θάλασσα να ανοίξει το ποτάμι. Να πάρει όλο τον όγκο του νερό. Γιατί αλλιώς τα ίδια προβλήματα θα έχει και θα πατήσουν οι πιο πάνω. Γιατί όταν δεν μπορεί να βγει ο όγκος του νερό, αμέσως το νερό θα έρθει και θα σκάσει πιο ψηλά.

> Θα σου πω κάτι άλλο… εάν δουλεύαμε λίγο τη γη, όλοι οι άνθρωποι, θα είμασαν πολύ διαφορετικά. Δεν τι δουλεύουμε τη γη. Δεν ξέρουν τα παιδιά τη γη. Δεν ξέρει ο κόσμος τι σημαίνει γη. Ο άνθρωπος είναι παμφάγο. Να πάρω, να πάρω… Και στο τέλος τι παίρνει…; Θα πάρει τη γη. Έχεις πάρει όλη τη γη. Και στο τέλος θα πάρεις τη γη. Εκεί θα καταντήσουμε..

> Το ποτάμι θα βρει τη ροή του. Εκεί που ήταν θα πάει. Δεν υπάρχει περίπτωση. Εδώ ένα Λίλας, ένας μεσσάπιος ποταμός. Δε σου λέω στην Αθήνα τα ρέματα, τα οικοδομίσαν όλα. Δεν φταίω εγώ. Το κράτος γιατί μου δίνει αυτό το δικαίωμα.Ελέτε εδώ, παιδιά, εκεί ήταν το ρέμα. Αφήστε το ρέμα για να φύγει το νερό. 

> Μπήκαμε στον Οκτώβρη. Και θέλω μία βροχή. Πού είναι;ν Ξεράθηκαν τα πάντα. Ο Οκτώβριο μήνα και να μην έχει βρέξει. Επτά μήνες τώρα, ούτε μία ψυχάλα. Δηλαδή έκανε μία > βροχούλα και τελείωσε; Δεν έχει βρέξει. Ούτε πρόκειται. Και αν θα βρέξει θα είναι μία πλημμύρα. Μακάρι να πάρει ο Λίλας στον όγκο του νερού, αυτό που είχε. Αν είναι παραπάνω καταστράφηκε ο κόσμος!

I had a conversation with the board members (all women) of the cultural centre of Agios Nikolaos, a village which is located in the estuary of the river. They described the first days of the floods and mainly how they supported the local community, with basic supplies and food. I presented myself and the project to the representative of the local community, Panagiotis Limperis.

### Expanding painting into space: An open intervention.

My desire to expand painting in space is escalating and so is my intention to draw attention to the river during this exploration. I have chosen to paint the rocks that are part of the riverbank between Vasiliko and Fylla bridges. The rocks are not part of the natural environment of the river. They were transported there to become part of the anti flood construction of the river that began after the flood of August 2020. Sole pieces of big rocks supporting one another create a union of fragments. They stand together to protect. This is possible due to their union. They all play a role in the wholeness. 

In a similar way people united and stood together to overcome this disaster. Historically, Greek people tend to unite to overcome an external threat but soon after they manage to confront it, they forget this bond.

My physical presence next to these big stones at the river, similar to the drawing at the estuary, required my whole body to move: walk, climb, bend, stretch in order to manage the painting “surface”. The weather conditions were different each time, dusty dry land or humid rainy atmosphere. The rocks are colored with iron oxide (yellow, green, blue and red) mixed with water without a bonding glue. As the time passes the color will fade away.

### Expanding drawing into space: An ephemeral intervention

The estuary of the river, where sweet and salty waters mix, feels more natural and vivid than the urbanised part of the river, which is dry, dusty and full of anti flood construction sites. Even though there are houses just a few meters from the riverbank, (one of them is abandoned, has never recovered from the last flood in 2020), there is a nice natural sensation of the environment.

I have been visiting this place several times during this three month period (September-December) and each time the estuary was different. Me and my family, we experienced different weather conditions, from a sunny warm day with incredible light to a rainy and windy day. On three different days, I used salt (a lot of it!) to mark the lines which divide water from dry land. Each time the borderlines were different.

The drawing requires my body to move quickly and determined. I am inside the drawing, I am part of it. Because of its scale, it is simultaneously intended and accidental. I don’t know exactly how it is developing because it is not possible to see it as a whole. I can see it only after I “finish” (the salt is finished), from the aerial pictures and videos made by the drone. Actually, in that moment of action my attention is in the place and the process, not the final result. 

My body is in a state of alertness. I am climbing up and down the hill, carrying the salt and equipment, walking up and down the stream, bending over, pouring, I am cold, I am hot, I feel an energetic boost! My mind is aware, in the moment, reflecting in action, but strangely also “switched off”. It seems like a reciprocal relationship, I am mapping the space and the space is mapping my physical and mental movement.

Ephemeral, with a limited time of existence, the salt is dissolving and the form I draw is changing quickly as the water also changes its border. It would constantly change because of the reaction of the water making it disappear.  Borders, boundaries and limits are in a flux and have to be redefined.

Close by there is an abandoned salt pans (Kopana). Apart from its properties, salt has a variety of symbolism. In ancient Greece salt was a symbol of trust and friendship And still in our time it is used as a protection of the “evil eye”.

How do they imagine a “beautiful” or “ugly” landscape? How will we produce food in the future? What do they consider important for the protection of nature? What are their messages? Let's give space and time for the voices of our children to be heard!

### Pythagorean cup

Pythagorean cup, created by the mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras, stands as e lesson on moderation and the consequences of greed.  It is a tangible demonstration of the concept: “nothing in excess” and reflects the concept of limit.

Eco Festival


**Eretria** is a town, 13 km from the Lilandio plain. Eretria is connected by ferry with Oropos (Skala), the town I live in. I visited and interviewed a very active group of firefighters and rescuers volunteers. This group of volunteers offered its services straight away after the flood in August 2020.

These three stones are part of the material used in the anti flood construction but for some unknown reason they are left lying in the middle of the river. For the first time I saw these stones I wanted to paint them gold, turning them into a symbol of their important mission to protect from floods but also the preciousness of the river.

In **Lefkandi,** me and my family, we had our last swim in the sea for this year. I had a few interviews with locals, mainly owners of restaurants and hotels. They described their own experiences of the flood of August in 2020.

<Interview intro="No one imagined this disaster. Then, a lot of people came to clean up. And unrelated people, who we only had a “hello”. Very compassionate afterwards and tolerant, because we could operate the store and psychologically. We sat, just like this… We couldn't do anything. We were in denial, really in denial. Our friends and people we know were coming here. And our house was flooded, we live behind the store. A lot of disaster.">

<p>Το πρωί, ήταν έτσι στεγνά όπως είναι τώρα, ίσα-ίσα που ψιχάλιζε λίγο…Όλο το βράδυ είχε βέβαια κεραυνούς και τέτοια. Το βράδυ είχε ξεκινήσει από πάνω, ακούγαμε κεραυνούς αλλά εδώ καμία σχέση, ο δρόμος ήταν στεγνός, δεν υπήρχε ίχνος.</p>
<p>Ξαφνικά στις εννιά παρά, εγώ είμαι στην παραλία και μάζευα σκουδιάκια και βλέπω να έρχεται το νερό λίγο, σιγά-σιγά, προς στη θάλασσα, να έρχεται, να έρχεται, να έρχεται. Στην αρχή νόμιζα ότι είχε βλώσει κάποιο φράτιο. Περνάει ένας άνθρωπος στο δρόμο και μας λέει, ότι έσπασε το ποτάμι. Δεν μπορούσαμε να φανταστούμε αυτή την καταστροφή που θα επακολουθήσει..</p>
<p>Μέσα σ’ ένα, 20 λεπτό, το νερό πήγε μέχρι το γόνατο. Ε, ξαφνικά, εκεί που συζητούσαμε, άρχισε ο κόσμος να αναστατώνεται και κάνει ένα “πράφ”, και έγινε ο κακός χαμός!</p>
<p>Εδώ πέρα στον μαγαζί άρχισαν να φεύγουν όλα, εδώ είχε και ένα χώρισμα, έφυγε… όλα τα πήρε σβάρνα… Αυτοκίνητα, όλα προς τη θάλασσα μέσα. Θα σας δείξω τη φωτογραφία. Το νερό ήταν εδώ πέρα κοντά…, τόσο…80 πόντους, ένα μέτρο!; Ένα μέτρο, έχω και βίντεο… Κάποιοι λέγανε, το νερό είναι πάνω 1,5 μέτρο. Δρόμος και παραλία είχαν γίνει ένα.</p>
<p>Δεν υπήρχε...όλα λάσπη. Δεν είχαμε και νερό… Για να είχαμε φέρει βυτίο για να καθαρίσουμε. Δεν μπορείς να φανταστείς, αλλιώς να στο λέω…Ήτανε πολύ…δεν μπορώ να στο περιγραψω…ήταν πολύ τραγικό!  Κανάμε δύο μέρες, για να καθαρίσουμε. </p>
<p>Ειλικρινά, εκείνη την ώρα δεν ξέρω με τι άλλο μπορούσε να είχε γίνει, γιατί είχε ορμή, πολύ ορμή! Κουνήθηκαν ψυγεία τεράστια! Μιλάμε, ο μικρός ο γιος μου, μου λέει, μάμα, τι θα πάμε να πνιγούμε; Ερχόταν το νερό. Αλλά στην ουσία, εδώ, στο σημείο, δεν έβρεχε τόσο, ψιχάλιζε. Έβρεχε πάνω και κατέβασε όλο το νερό και έσπασε από δύο μεριές στον κάμπο.</p>
<p>Αύγουστος ήταν, είχε κόσμο, πάνω στη σεζόν. Οι επαγγελματίες καταστράφηκαν. Πάνω στο full της σεζόν… χάλασαν τα πάντα. Όλα, φούσκωσαν. Αποζημιωθήκαμε από την νομαρχία και από το υπουργείο… Ε, εντάξει, οι ζημιές δεν καλήφθηκαν. Εμείς οι επαγγελματίες πήραμε 8.000 ευρώ. Τί να καλύψεις; Και το κέρδος, δηλαδή, που θα δούλευες... Εντάξει, ήταν μια μικρή βοήθεια, σε αυτόν των πανικό. Σχετικά γρήγορα. Εγώ το περίμενα να είναι πολύ χειρότερα, αλλά ευτυχώς ήταν σχετικά γρήγορα. Δηλαδή, αυτό έγινε Αύγουστο μέχρι το τέλος Οκτωβρίου, εμείς τουλάχιστον είχαμε πάρει. </p>
<p>Πάρα πόλος ο κόσμος. Αυτό λέω, πραγματικά, πρέπει να είμαι πολύ καλός άνθρωπος και είχα για τόσο βοήθεια. Εδώ, είχε σκάψει όλη την άμμο, είχε γίνει ολόκληρο φαράγγι. Δηλαδή, να φανταστείς, εγώ προσπαθούσα να μαζέψω τις ξαπλώσεις, όταν βλέπαμε ότι σκάει το νερό, και ξαδέρφη μου, από πάνω το μπαλκόνι μου λέει, έρχεται το ποτάμι, γιατί το είδε, από ψηλά να έχετε φούλ.</p>
<p>Ο άντρας μου είχε πάει να αφήσει πιο πέρα τα αυτοκίνητα, γιατί μας πήρε δύο αυτοκίνητα, το ένα το προλάβαμε και το πήγαμε τέρμα, στην αρχή της παραλίας.</p>
<p>Δεν φανταζόταν κανείς θα γίνει και αυτή η μεγάλη καταστροφή. Μετά, στο μάζεμα ήρθε πολύς κόσμους. Και άσχετος κόσμος, που είχαμε μόνο ένα “γεια”. Πάρα πολύ συμπονετικός μετά και ανεκτικός, γιατί μετά μέχρι να λειτουργήσουμε ξανά και το μαγαζί και ψυχολογικά. Καθόμασταν, έτσι…Δεν μπορούσαμε να κάνουμε τίποτα. Είμασταν σε άρνηση, πραγματικά σε άρνηση. Ερχόντουσαν οι φίλοι μας και οι γνωστοί μας και μαζεύτηκε όλο. Και το σπίτι μας πλημήτησε, μένουμε πίσω από το μαγαζί. Πολύ καταστροφή. </p>
<p>Στον Μπούρτζι, ήταν κάτι παιδιά που πήγαιναν και βοηθούσαν για πολύ καιρό. Σίγουρα, οι σύλλογοι θα είχαν μαζέψει κάποια άτομα. Εδώ δεν ήταν τόσο χάλια. Δηλαδή, εδώ πέρα ο καθένας με τους γνωστούς, εθελοντικά από μόνοι τους. Ο δήμος, τίποτα. Μες στις λάσπες, σκουπίδια, κουνούπια…είχαμε πάρει με τον ανιψιό μου, με ένα φορτηγό και τα πετάξαμε μόνο μας. Λάσπες, κουνούπια... Και νερό δεν είχαμε, κανά δυο τρεις μέρες… .</p>
<p>Κάνουν αντιπλημμυρικά έργα, πόσα χρόνια τώρα… Με το που πιάνει η βροχή, ειδικά τον πρώτο καιρό, δε το συζητώ, μετακινούμε τα αυτοκίνητα. Είμαστε όλοι έτσι, στην τσίτα. Και ακόμα και τώρα δηλαδή…</p>

I asked again, they said the bridge fell down, got covered in mud and other stuff and stayed there, buried. Why they had to leave the bridge there? This bridge is historic, it had to be rebuilt. It stayed there.">

<p><span>Λοιπό, ξυπνήσαμε ένα πρωί με κάτι βουητά, ξερω ‘γω, τι γίνεται, πόλεμος, ελικόπτερα. Περνάγανε από πάνω…εμείς δε μένουμε, μένουμε στο Βασιλικό. Σηκωθήκαμε, γιατί ήταν πρωί-πρωί, βγήκαμε έξω, ε, βλέπουμε ελικόπτερα, ρε, τι έγινε… Εντωμεταξύ, ξέραμε ό,τι έγινε τη νύχτα, κατακλυσμό. Τί έγινε…; Βγαίνουμε έξω από το σπίτι, που φαίνεται ένα σημείο του εμπορικού, από εκεί πλευρά, εκεί που εκβάλλει ο Λίλας. Και είδαμε θολούρα, από εκεί, άντε τώρα, έχουν πλημμυρίσει τα πάντα, γιατί είχε ξαναγίνει το 2009, αλλά ήταν μικρότερης κλίμακας τότε. Τώρα, παρασύρθηκαν από μια μάντρα που είχε φορτηγά και μηχανήματα εκσκαφής και τέτοια, παρασύρθηκαν, φτάσανε σε ένα μέρος εδώ από κάτω και έκλεισε το ποτάμι τελείως. Έκλεισε το ποτάμι τελείως και όλα τα νερά γυρίσανε προς τα ΄δώ. Δηλαδή, εδώ ο δρόμος, αυτός εδώ, είχε 50 με 60 εκατοστά νερό. Αυτοκίνητα που ήταν εδώ παρκαρισμένα, τα πήρε όλα. Εντάξει, δε βρεθήκαν στη θάλασσα αλλά μεταξύ τους… Από εκεί, που σου λέω, τα ελικόπτερα παίρνανε ανθρώπους από τα σπίτια, γιατί μερικά σπίτια, από ό,τι μάθαμε, ήταν πολύ μέσα στο ρεύμα. Όχι στο ρέμα, στο ρεύμα. Είχε ορμή το ποτάμι. </span></p><p><span>Ε, λοιπόν, εδώ ήρθαν τα νερά από τον άλλο δρόμο, μέχρι και από τον άλλο δρόμο, που είναι λίγο πολύ δύσκολο για να βλέπεις νερό εκεί πέρα να τρέσεις. Από εδώ μέχρι όλη η παραλία, κάτω μέχρι γύρω από εκεί, δεν είχε μείνει τίποτα. Άμμο δεν έβρισκες ούτε για μια χούφτα, γιατί την είχε πάρει όλη η παραλία μέσα. Ε, ό,τι βρήκε εδώ τα παρέσυρε, δεν έμεινε τίποτα. </span></p><p><span>Ήρθανε μηχανήματα, να τα μαζευτήκανε όσα αυτοκίνητα όσα μπορούσαν να μαζευτούν.  Ξεκινήσανε κάποια πράγματα από τους κατοίκους, αλλά άμεσα, δηλαδή, την μία μέρα έγινε αυτό και την άλλη μέρα είχανε ξεκινήσει οι καθαρισμοί, όλα αυτά, οι μετακινήσεις για τα αυτοκίνητα κλπ. Δηλαδή δεν καθυστέρησαν, ήρθαν την άλλη μέρα. Δεν ξέρανε κατευθείαν πού να πάνε. Δεν ξέρανε πού να πάνε. Από εδώ, όλοι γύρω-γύρω εκεί, σαν να το βρεις στο χάρτη, μέχρι εκεί στο Μπούρτζι. Είναι μετά το ποτάμι.</span></p><p><span>Από εκεί και μετά γίνανε και κάτι καταστροφές σε κτίρια, σε υποδομές και αυτά. Δηλαδή, το μισό γήπεδο του Βασιλικού έφυγε.Ένα γυμναστήριο που έχουμε εδώ, μετά τη γέφυρα, όπως βλέπουμε στα αριστερά, πλημμύρισε όλο, βγήκε 50% ακατάλληλο. Δηλαδή, όχι τα κτίρια, ότι είχε μέσα το μπάσκετ…</span></p><p><span>Και μετά καθαρίστηκαν όλοι οι δρόμοι. Η γέφυρα των Φύλλων που καταστράφηκε, δίπλα είχε μία παλιά γέφυρα, σιδερένια, που περνάγανε, πριν γίνει η καινούργια, από εκεί όλα τα κάρα και αυτά... Αυτή εξαφανίστηκε η γέφυρα, ούτε την ξαναφτιάξανε. Εγώ ρώτησα, τί έγινε ρε παιδιά αυτή η γέφυρα; Λέει, την πήρε το ποτάμι. Δεν την παίρνει το ποτάμι σιδερένια γέφυρα! Όπως και να το κάνεις... Ξαναρώτησα, λέει ότι έπεσε η γέφυρα κάτω, μουλώθηκε από τα μπάζα και τέτοια και έμεινε εκεί, θαμμένη.  Και έπρεπε τώρα να την αφήσουν εκεί τη γέφυρα; Αυτή η γέφυρα είναι ιστορική, έπρεπε να ξαναστηθεί. Έμεινε εκεί.</span></p><p><span>Τέλος πάντων, μετά αρχίσανε εδώ πέρα, κουβαλάγανε άμμο από το ποτάμι, από τα πάνω μέρη που είχε καθαρίσει. Δεν υπήρχε καθόλου άμμος.Γινόταν αποστράγγιση από πίσω.  Μέσα στα περιφραγμένα είχαν έρθει μπάζα, φύλλα, κλαδιά, διάφορα και είχαν είχαν κλείσει τα συρματοπλέγματα. Και τα νερά συγκρατιόντουσαν μέσα για μέρες. Πυροσβεστικοί, αστυνομίες, λιμενικό, από εκεί ψάχνανε μήπως βρουν τίποτα, γιατί… δεν ξέρανε τις πρώτες μέρες τι γινόταν ακριβώς.  Εκτός από τα ζώα, δεν είχαν αναφερθεί, πώς το λένε, που δεν τους βρίσκουμε, αγνώμενοι… </span></p><p><span>Θα έρθουν και χειρότερα.. Αυτό το πράμα, εδώ η παραλία, ήταν κρανίου τόπος.</span></p>

<Interview intro="It was the 9th of August , the customers left. The season was gone, gone…The sea was ruined. People couldn't swim. The sea was murky. The mud... Very bad. And such a strong stream!">

 <p>Ηταν κάπος από παλιά, έφτιαχνε κάτω ένα σπίτι, ένα σπίτι. Και του λέγει, ο Αχιλλέας,  άμα ακούσεις καμιά φορά τη βοή του ποταμού, μάζεψτα και φύγε, έτσι έγινε… Βούιζε, βουιζε, βουιζε. Δεν προλάβαμε τίποτα, μέχρι να μας πάρουν τηλέφωνο  ότι έρχεται ο ποταμός, είχαμε πλημμυρίσει. Μέσα σε ένα λεπτό, όλος ο χείμαρρος κάτω. </p>
<p>Ήταν 9 Αυγούστου, οι πελάτες είχαν κατεβεί κάτω.  Η Σεζόν πάει, χάθηκε. Η Σεζόν χάθηκε, γιατί χάλασε η θάλασσα. Δεν μπορούσε ο κόσμος να κάνει μπάνιο. Η θάλασσα ήταν θολή. Η λάσπη… Πολύ χάλια. Και τέτοια ορμή! Να φανταστείτε ότι κατεβάσει μπουκάλες υγραερίου. Βάλαμε το προσωπικό… τόσο λάσπη, με τα καρότσια τη βγάλαμε. </p>
<p>Αποζημιώσε το κράτος, σχετικά γρήγορα. Βγήκαν οι υπηρεσίες έξω, εκαναν καταμέτρηση των ζημιών και όλα καλά πήγανε.</p>
<p>Τα αυτοκίνητα εδώ στους κάθετους δρόμους, κανένα δε λειτούργησε με το νερό… Χαθήκανε πέντε έξι άτομα, εδω στην περιφέρεια. Στον Μπούρτσι ήταν χειρότερα. Να πάτε λιγακι.Ένας εβδομηντάρης τον πήρε ο γιος με τη μηχανή για να τον σώσει, τον έβαλε στην καρότσα και έπεσε από πάνω και τον πήγε κατευθείαν στη θάλασσα μετά.</p>

Lefkandi


Between the villages of Mytikas and Fylla, on a rocky hill two Venetian forts were built in the 15th century. At its foothill flows the river Lilandas. These two towers, among other tasks, secured the waters of the river to protect and optimise the water supply system in Chalkida and controlled the irrigation of agricultural fields. Probably in one of the two towers a Venetian officer, the river master (potamarchis), who was in charge of this system.

This place has an amazing panoramic view of the Lilantian plain and the river. The towers are well preserved but the surrounding area seems a little bit abandoned. There are two basic views on the place. One, like a birds-eye view, is revealing the whole landscape and the other is capturing details of the place. In a way I am the observer but also I am part of the observation, I am becoming part of the landscape.

Mytikas


This cultural centre is also in Agios Nikolaos village in the Burtzi area, located between the river and the sea. We talked about the impact of the flood and exchanged ideas regarding a participatory project. We decided to produce collaboratively with members of the centre and the community a wall painting. They expressed their need to offer some activity and social interaction with the elderly and explained that during the winter time people feel isolated.
